Warrens War is the account of Louis Warren Saffold from the time he was drafted in World War II until his death. The book begins with the 90 actual letters sent by Warren (his preferred name) to his wife Mary while in boot camp until his return home before being shipped overseas to fight Hitlers army occupying France. These letters tell what boot camp was like in 1943. His writing style makes these stories very entertaining.
The second part of the book is a collection of war stories he told me, his son, and my sister about what he experienced from the time he returned to the Army until he was taken out of the line because of being wounded and returned to the US for treatment and rehabilitation. He had fought through France, Luxemburg, and finally the Hrtgen Forrest at the edge of Germany. Again, because of his sense of humor, not all the stories are tense, some are downright funny. All of them are interesting. All of them are about what actually happened.
The third part of the book is about Warrens life after he was honorably discharged after the war ended. He had a successful life, but was plagued by PTSD. The book ends with a comment from myself and my sister, his two oldest children, on PTSD and what is happening with todays veterans. This book is entertaining from beginning to end.
